Art, School and a Fairytale
This paper titled Art, School and a Fairytale, refers to the composition and realization of an activity through art for the 2013-2014 school year, based on Eugene Trivizas’ tale “Chessboard Fugitives” at Gerakas Fine Arts School.
The aim of this activity was multileveled and had many aspects. We wanted to present the importance and the dynamics of three directions/vocations in our school (Fine/visual arts, Theatre and Dance) working together and to inspire our students to discover that: a “Setting” of an play could motivate the action’s development, could become an interactive object, while being an equal protagonist at the final result, at the same time. Furthermore, through the action we tried to pinpoint the connection of Education through and/or around the Arts, with their mutual feedback as a goal. Education is inspired by myth and forms ethics. Fiction is the combination of myths and their use in educational practice to reinforce hands on teaching practices. This is the starting point of our exciting journey into fiction, where: education through art on one hand, the end result as artistic creation on the other, our School environment, syllabus and framework, become fellow traveler-“myths”, as mandated by the mention at this fairytale.
Through every stage of the action’s development, the students were facing a new experience, guided from personal training to group work, as particular collaborations ended in an organized thematic composition, transforming the whole experience into a unified performance. Thus, every time each group was working together, researching and experiencing.
After all, “what qualifies creative genious is not knowledge…” alone, it is mainly one’s desire and ability to exchange ideas, feelings and to connect with and trust others in creative activities.
